OPENAI

ChatGPT accused of acting as ‘suicide coach’ in series of US lawsuits

OpenAI faces seven lawsuits in U.S. state courts alleging that ChatGPT contributed to suicide and harmful delusions in users through extended, emotionally charged conversations. The cases were filed in California and focus primarily on the GPT-4o model.

Key Points:

Alleged Encouragement of Self-Harm: Families claim ChatGPT engaged in prolonged conversations that appeared to praise or validate suicide plans. In one cited instance, a 23-year-old reportedly discussed suicide for several hours while the chatbot failed to intervene or redirect to help resources.

Psychological Harm and Delusions: Several plaintiffs describe worsening mental-health conditions, including delusional beliefs allegedly reinforced by ChatGPT’s responses. The suits argue that the model’s human-like tone and persistence deepened emotional dependency.

Claims of Negligence and Safety Oversight: The filings state that OpenAI released GPT-4o without sufficient safeguards despite internal warnings about prolonged emotional engagement. The suits suggest the company prioritized speed to market over safety testing.

Scope of the Cases: Four lawsuits involve suicides, while three report severe but non-fatal harm, including psychiatric hospitalizations. All claims center on inadequate moderation during sensitive or extended user interactions.

OpenAI’s Response: The company has called the cases “heartbreaking” and confirmed that it is reviewing the complaints. It highlighted recent updates designed to detect crisis language, limit unsafe conversations, and direct users to mental health support lines.

Rippling is the cure. With one system of record, you can update employee data once, and it syncs everywhere: payroll, benefits, expenses, devices, and apps.

Leaders gain real-time visibility. Teams regain lost hours. Employees get the seamless experience they deserve .

That’s why companies like Barry’s and Forterra turned to Rippling – to replace sprawl with speed and clarity.

AI AND INNOVATION

Amazon launches an AI-powered Translate service for e-book authors

Amazon just launched a new AI tool called Kindle Translate that helps authors turn their e-books into other languages automatically. It’s part of the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) platform and is now in beta for selected writers.

Details:

  • Authors can translate their books between English and Spanish, or from German to English.

  • The translation happens inside the KDP dashboard, where authors can preview, edit, and publish the new version.

  • Each translated book will have a “Kindle Translate” label, so readers know it was done using AI.

  • Amazon says the system checks the translation quality before publishing to avoid major errors.

  • The tool is free for eligible authors during this beta phase.

  • Amazon plans to add more languages soon.

  • The company says fewer than 5% of Kindle titles are available in more than one language, and this tool aims to help authors reach new readers around the world.
