Google expands access to Opal, its AI vibe-coding app

Google has expanded access to Opal, its new AI “vibe-coding” app that lets anyone build mini-apps using natural language and visuals instead of code.
Key Points:
Visual App Building: Opal enables users to create small AI web apps by simply describing what they want. It then builds a visual workflow that connects inputs, outputs, and actions without coding.
Prompt-Based Logic: The app combines natural language processing with model chaining, allowing users to design functions and tweak results directly in a drag-and-drop interface.
Template Gallery: Google offers starter templates that users can remix or customize to speed up the creation process.
Sharing and Collaboration: Finished apps can be shared through Google accounts, allowing others to easily run or adapt them.
Access and Availability: Opal is currently in public beta. Access has now been granted to 15 additional countries. Expansion to other regions will follow later once testing is complete.
Goal and Outlook: Google aims to make AI app creation accessible to non-developers, competing with tools like Replit and Figma. Early users say it feels creative and fun, though performance can be uneven, and some features remain experimental.

AI AND ADOPTION
Sora’s first-week downloads nearly matched ChatGPT’s launch.

OpenAI’s video app Sora had almost as many downloads in its first week as ChatGPT did when it launched. The app quickly gained traction across the U.S. and Canada, showing strong interest in AI-powered video tools.
Details:
Sora reached about 627,000 iOS downloads in its first seven days, just slightly higher than ChatGPT’s 606,000 iOS downloads during its first week.
Of the total, around 45,000 installs came from Canada, meaning most downloads were from U.S. users.
When counting only U.S. numbers, Sora’s first-week downloads were about 96% of ChatGPT’s early results.
The strong start shows how quickly users are adopting new AI apps, especially those focused on creative tools like text-to-video generation.
Analysts say the launch suggests growing public interest in consumer-facing AI tools beyond chat and image generation.
